Description

Skip the long prep and still enjoy fluffy, flavor-packed bao buns with this easy cheat recipe! Using soft tortillas as a shortcut, these buns come together in minutes and are filled with your choice of savory protein, fresh veggies, and tangy sauces. Perfect for weeknight dinners, parties, or when the bao craving hits fast.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bao “Buns”:

4 medium flour tortillas (soft, flexible ones work best)

1 tsp oil or cooking spray

For the Filling (choose one or mix):

1 cup cooked pork belly or pulled pork

1 cup shredded chicken (grilled or roasted)

1 cup tofu or tempeh (pan-fried until golden)

½ cucumber, thinly sliced

1 carrot, julienned or pickled

45 radishes, thinly sliced

For the Toppings & Flavor:

3 tbsp hoisin sauce

1 tbsp sriracha or chili sauce (optional)

¼ cup pickled vegetables (store-bought or homemade)

Fresh cilantro or mint leaves

1 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

Warm the tortillas: Cut tortillas in half. Brush lightly with oil and fold into a taco shape. Warm in a non-stick pan for 1–2 minutes until soft but not crispy. Optional: steam them in a basket for extra fluffiness.

Prepare the filling: Warm up pork, chicken, or tofu until hot. Toss with a little hoisin or soy sauce for extra flavor.

Build the buns: Spread hoisin sauce inside each tortilla “bun.” Add protein, then layer with cucumber, carrot, radish, and pickled veggies.

Add toppings: Drizzle with sriracha, sprinkle sesame seeds, and top with fresh herbs.

Serve & enjoy: Arrange on a platter and serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Don’t overfill—bao buns are best when there’s balance between bun, filling, and fresh toppings.

Prep veggies and fillings ahead of time for a 10-minute assembly.

Keep tortillas and fillings separate if storing leftovers to avoid sogginess.
